Raja Durai’s story is one of relentless perseverance, balancing hard work in Koyambedu Market with a dream for a better future for his family. His journey proves that even in poverty, education and determination can pave the way for success.
At the heart of the bustling Koyambedu Market, where life begins when the city sleeps, Raja Durai stands strong. His hands, hardened by years of labor, carry not just heavy loads but also the weight of responsibility. At just 25, he has spent half his life in this market, waking up at 1 AM and working until midnight. Yet, despite the exhaustion, his eyes burn with determination.
“I had to come here and work hard to support my family,” he says. “My mother used to ask me, ‘if you study, who will earn and give us money ?’ We had no choice, but I made a choice. I made my sister study biomedical engineering by working here. Now, I’m also preparing for the TNPSC exams.”
Raja Durai studied BA history, but his education did not come easily. Poverty forced him to work at an early age. Yet, instead of giving up, he fought harder. “If we want to grow, if we want to move from one place to another, we must work hard. Our children should never suffer in life as we did. That’s the only reason we work
For him, life has been a battle against poverty, but it has also been his greatest teacher. “Poverty taught me one thing: how to fight in this society. Respect or disrespect, society decided it based on our economic status.”
His daily routine is relentless. But in the midst of this exhausting cycle, he has found family among the workers. “Whatever comes to our minds, we share with each other like brothers; we never treat anyone differently.”
He speaks with admiration about his employer. “First, he sits and talks. He gives us respect and treats us with dignity. That’s what makes him different.”
But Raja Durai’s biggest dream is not for himself; it is for his family. “My sister should never face the hardships I did. That’s why I made her study. I need to grow. My family needs to grow. And only education can achieve that. Nothing else can
He has no illusions about the world. “No one else will help. If a poor person wants to be rich, he must study. That’s the truth
His story is not just his own; it is the story of countless young men and women fighting for a better tomorrow. Through sleepless nights and endless struggles, Raja Durai proves that true strength lies not in the physical capacity but in the heart and mind. His journey is a reminder that dreams don’t die in poverty; they rise from it.
