Nagamma’s wisdom: strength, freedom, and true wealth.

Nagamma, a resilient woman selling water cans by the lighthouse, shows us that true wealth lies in love and contentment, not material gains. Her wisdom and simple life remind us to embrace freedom, defy societal norms, and find happiness in the little things.

Nagamma, a resilient woman selling water cans by the lighthouse, shows us that true wealth lies in love and contentment, not material gains. Her wisdom and simple life remind us to embrace freedom, defy societal norms, and find happiness in the little things.

Near the lighthouse, under the hot sun, sits Nagamma, an old woman selling water cans. Some days she sells one or two; other days, none. “Vyabharam dhinamum orey madri irukkadhu maa...” (Business is always the same, every day.) But her spirit stays strong, no matter what.

“If you have the strength of a cat, we have the strength of an elephant. But we won’t show that.” Her words are full of wisdom from years of struggle.

She used to run a dosa shop, but life made her move on. “Dosa kada onnu vechirundaen, aana business onnum perusa pogala.” (I had a dosa shop, but the business didn’t grow.) She accepts it with grace, knowing life doesn’t always go as planned.

“Look at life with a good perspective,” she says.

Nagamma quietly goes against society’s rules. Her defiance isn’t loud or harsh; it’s simple and strong. She’s a woman who has lived long enough to know that the world will always have opinions, but in the end, the body, the choices, and the freedom belong to each person. “Ean andha paarva paakara, Jeans pant vikkadhavanga irukangala, appo pota enna, thappe kedayadhu, en kolgaikku” (Why worry about those who don’t wear jeans? What’s wrong with me wearing them? It doesn’t matter.)

For Nagamma, true wealth isn’t about money; it’s about love. “En veetukar enna kalyanam panni arpudhama paathukutaru... Nalla pilainga, en pethi, peran en mela uyir” (My husband took care of me, my children are good, and my grandchildren love me. What else do I need? Everything else will fade.)

Her life is simple, but her words stay with us, reminding us of strength, freedom, and how important it is to be happy with what we have.
