Manoharan sits on his bullock cart, his eyes tired but filled with stories. A former painter turned fruit seller, he’s seen a lifetime of struggles but never complains, only shares wisdom.
“I studied till 8th. Skipped 9th because we were playful back then. Now I realize education comes before everything, even parents,” he says.
After 20 years as a painter, health issues like wheezing forced him to stop. Now he sells fruits, ensuring his bull is well-fed with guava, apples, and even grapes. “I’ll starve, but my bull won’t.”
With a wry smile, he shares, “When you die, dogs will come. People? They check your pockets first.”
His day starts at 7 AM and ends past midnight. “I don’t feel like going home. Nothing’s there. I eat and sleep. My only goal is to educate my kids. That’s every parent’s duty.”
He teaches his child self-reliance: “Don’t blindly trust anyone. Work hard. Stand on your own feet.”
People see the fruit, not the 4 AM market trips, the auto fare, or the bullock cart effort. “ Some even tear the tip before buying. I tell them, if you touch it, it’s sour. If I do, it’s sweet!” he laughs.
